Getting Ready for Magic The Gathering Tournaments

by staff on February 21, 2010

Hey everybody. It’s me again, here to cheer you up with another exciting adventure in magic the gathering singles. Okay, so for those of you that have played Magic The Gathering tournmants before (a lot of them), this post may by moot. If you haven’t, you might learn something. Today, I’m going to cover how to prepare and get ready for your first magic The Gathering tournament.

As we all know, there are douchebags in every aspect of life, If you’re a boxer, you’re going to find douchebags that like to box. The same is with Magic The Gathering. If you’re not on your toes, there are going to be people that want to win so badly that they’ll make fun of you and overall just try and degrade and domoralize you during the match. Watch out for these people, as that’s their goal – to win. These people may also even try to cheat, which leads me to my first point….

1. Read over the Magic The Gathering Rules

It might not happen during your first magic the gathering card tournmant. it might not happen during the second one, but eventually, you’re going to have somebody that is trying to cheat when playing against you in the tourney. It’s YOUR responsibility to spot these people and take them out and stop them from cheating. Yes, there is a judge available, but you only call him over if YOU spot the cheating first. If you’re unable to spot cheaters, they’ll succeed. (an alternative to the judge is to punch them in the face, but that’s not recommended).

2. Get your materials ready.

- Buy Magic The Gathering Life Counters – you’re going to need these to keep track of your lift. You can also use a notepad, but this looks amateur.

- Buy A Notepad – this is useful for writing down general things happening in the game. (e.i. you got to look at your opponents hand, and you can write down all their cards so you don’t forget what you saw – yes. this is legal!)

3. Build your deck or buy a custom deck

A lot of times, people are in shock as to how much decks cost when you buy all of the cards individually at a local card shop. This is because the card shops have to pay to have the cards shipped to them, they have to pay somebody to stock them, they have to pay somebody to man the register and so on and so forth. Shop online people. Ecommerce stores that you find online that sell Magic Cards are much cheaper and in some cases, you can even get free shipping. There are some links on the site linking to magic the gathering stores (if they’re still there). Check them out and use them instead of spending the gas and spending more for your cards at your local shop.

That’s it ladies and gentlemen. Now go unleash 4 bad moons and some unholy strengths!
